Notes on My Recent Cruise in Europe
8/15/2012 5:14:10 PM    [ Flag as Inappropriate ]

It is three weeks since my return to Australia after a fifteen-day trip cruising up the Rhine and Danube Rivers.
On Sunday 15 July, after spending 28 hours on flights from Hobart to Frankfurt we were greeted at Baggage Collection by a representative of the cruise ship. How glad we were to see him! No longer did we have to worry about going through airport security etc and could sit back and relax. By 2.30 pm we were booked into the AmaDante ship that was moored at Budapest and were able to unpack our belongings. the guests. That night the 31 year-old captain welcomed us and gave to each female a budding red rose and to the males a shake of is hand. How romantic! While dining that evening two gypsies serenaded the guests.

The next day we toured the Budapest Opera House; it was absolutely gorgeous inside. At the conclusion of the tour we were offered champagne and treated to an impromptu concert by local artists who sang arias magnificently. In the great hall I vividly remember a huge portrait of a famous actress who was well known for her portrayal of Carmen Miranda. What was so unusual about the portrait that the woman was holding a cigarette in her left hand.

The following day we were bussed to the 'Buda' part of the city. It was so crowded there! Zillions of people crowded the historic area high in the hills. It was hard to imagine that the Romans had built fortifications in the old city. Parts of the Roman walls could be seen in the foundations of the Hilton Hotel.

On Tuesday night we were bussed to a Mozart and Strauss concert in Vienna. The hall was absolutely packed. I was lucky enough to be allocated an isle seat.Due to the concert hall being flat, many heads obstructed the view of the orchestra so I spent most of the time with my head leaning to the right of isle to see more. I loved the sopranos who were voluptuously dressed and sang so well. Towards the end, whips cracked; music was made with hammers and the concert became a farce. However, the audience just loved it all and gave numerous standing ovations everyone on board was given a CD of the concert. An unexpected gift that was most appreciated.
