Castles in the Sky: October 08, 2012
10/8/2012 7:08:19 AM

Tonight may prove to be difficult for two purring fur-babies. My black suitcase (long since retired to the back of the closet) is coming out to be filled for a trip to Maine.

Over the last 18 months they’ve done all they could to defile it by rolling on it and covering it with fur, hoping to render it unusable.

One could almost hear the wheels turning in their fuzzy little heads.

Simon: Hey Maggie, roll around on it. Lick it first so the fur will stick better.

Maggie: (After several layers of white Simon fur built up on top of the black Maggie fur...) Nice work! She’ll never get it off.

Ah fur-balls of little faith. I have one of those Pledge do-hickies that rolls the fuzz off. Might take me an hour or two considering the mess they left, but I WILL prevail. Mom IS going to Maine. (Next time the suitcase goes into the closet, it’ll be covered by a trash bag.

I haven’t been out of town since the flood. Or so it seems. Mom moved to Florida a year ago, so my reasons for travel have been tabled. I now have all I want within two miles of our home. Hubs, Mom, Kidlet, my fur-babies, church…the list goes on.

But there's at least one thing missing from that list. My dear friend De.

Two years ago (or so) she and her family moved to Maine. Her Hubs who is a physician’s assistant received a really great job offer. So they moved. I thought they’d last a year and be screaming for the opportunity to return to Florida after their first winter shoveling snow. Nope. They just bought a house there so it’s a done deal.

When she lived here we didn’t see each other much. She had her life and I had mine. But it was always a comfort to both of us to know the other was nearby. Just in case. SO I suffered a bit of withdrawal and a sense of abandonment when she moved away. Yep. Ludicrous as it seemed it was all about me, instead of rejoicing for her happiness.

After she left, we didn’t talk much at first. She was busy setting up her new life. I didn't push it because I was miffed and going through a full blown pity party.

But in spite of it all De’s been riding me like a Harley to come up and visit for the weekend. I finally got over myself and said yes. Fall color will be peaking, the temps will be nippy, fireplace burning and there will girl chats; overdue and missed. She has been one of my favorite people for as long as I can remember.

And being the loyal friend I should have been all along, I have prepared a highly prized hostess gift. I went to the Candy Kitchen on Madeira Beach and bought out their entire supply of her favorite Zagnut Bars, no longer easily found in Maine. Seventeen of those babies are going into my fuzzy suitcase. Great munching while watching movies and the smile I’m certain to get will be worth every penny.

Her kidlets are adorable, and her hubby is a great guy.

It should be a cool weekend. I'll get a chance re-bond with my buddy. It should take us all of five minutes. Maybe less. :O)

Thank you Father for the opportunity.

And thank YOU for stopping by!
