Ted's Itinerary 3/18/2013 1:53:57 PM An account of my second cousin, Ted Hyland who is the one mentioned in my article entitled "Finding Ted"visited Tasmania for a few days. On Friday 15 March, my husband George,my second cousin Ted who was visiting from Sydney and I set off early for our drive to the Port Arthur Historic Site. The weather's forecast for the day was a sunny 23 degrees. On the way we drove through the township of Dunalley. It was most depressing viewing the scorched landscape, housed destroyed by fire and the diminished number of sheep and cattle grazing in the the fields that had miraculously escaped the bushfire. Bulldozers could be seen knocking down collapsed houses so the rubbish could be taken away.
Ted was craving to eat a Tasmanian crayfish so we stopped at the partly ruined Fish Factory. There was nothing on their shelves. The elderly owner had a bent back and his neck was in a brace. He politely directed us to a General Goods shop. They did not have any crayfish for sale.
We were glad to leave the desolate village and proceed to Port Arthur. One of the highlights of our tour was our visit to the prisoner's separate prison that was built for hardened convicts who continually got into trouble and were placed in solitary confinement. Inside was a remodelled church that was used for Sunday service. That was the only occasion the convicts were permitted to use their voices and sing hymns. They were forbidden to talk to each other and couldn't see other convicts because barriers were placed so they couldn't see other convicts.
As we entered a recording played "Nearer to God". The hymn was beautifully sung. Ted climbed the pulpit and addressed a female group who had just entered: "Now girls ..." and gave them such an unusual sermon that had them in stitches. That was the day's highlight. The remainder of the time we walked around the beautiful grounds and inspected restored cottages until Ted became breathless. At that point we decided to leave.
