Holiday in Queensland
10/22/2013 5:08:05 PM    [ Flag as Inappropriate ]

Travelling to and from Family Reunions in Brisbane and Buderim,Queensland.
Tuesday 15 October was the beginning of our one week's holiday in Queensland. We flew with Virgin Airlines. I was allocated a window seat - that was great because It was a lovely, sunny day once the plane cleared Hobart. I saw lots of arid land and beautiful fluffy clouds nearly all the way. However, while flying over New South Wales we saw a bushfire in the distance. It was a stark reminder of last summer's bushfires and the high temperatures we experienced in January.

When we landed at Brisbane Airport the temperature was a sunny, balmy 23 degrees.George's favorite cousin Tanya was waiting for us at the Baggage Collection area. She was her usual vivacious self and appeared not to have aged since the last time we stayed with her. I was amazed how much Brisbane had grown since we visited there three years ago all these highways and by-lanes made it a complex drive. When we arrived at Tanya's place, the house was hotter than the outside temperature. Due to her financial circumstances Tanya could only afford to put on the the air conditioning on hot days.

We had come up to attend a First Cousins Reunion that was to be held on the South Coast at cousin Gala's house. Since the last reunion one cousin had died of cancer a few months later. We had brought up two kilos of Tasmanian smoked salmon as our contribution to the lunch. As it was frozen and vacuum packed it survived our journey to Queensland. At the Reunion 15 cousins and their spouses were present. One of those cousins had been my English tutor in 1963. I didn't know whether she would recognise me.

One cousin's wife who was born in Northern India, opened up and told us the horrific story of her childhood when she and her sister were abducted by their father. They were starved, locked up and whipped. They never saw their mother again.

Another cousin told me how much he had enjoyed reading my book "Gaining a Sense of Self". He was so cross with himself because he had absently-mined left the book on the table at home. His intention was was to have me autograph his copy.

I had only met our Hostess once and this time I had the opportunity to talk to her in depth. She and I had much in common: she had attended the same high school as I, but 10 years earlier. She had worked at three same municipal libraries as I.Now 82, and a widow for many years she has carved out a busy schedule as a volunteer, Zumba dancer, plays bridge and golf. The Reunion finished at 4:30 pm. Everyone enjoyed themselves and were reluctant to leave. The following day my husband bussed to Buderim for our sister-in-law's 60th birthday.
