Morgan, I agree with you. We can all learn a lot from Buddhists. However, the tribal people I was visiting were not Buddhists, they were animists and lived in fear of the spirits. If a child were sick, for instance, they assumed they had done something wrong and were being punished by an irate spirit. The solution? Go to the witch doctor, pay him to perform a ritual (which nowadays doesn't usually involve animal sacrifice) and wait to see if the child improves. Lots of fear.
