SUR MALAYALEES CELEBRATED ONAM FOR THE THIRD CONSECUTIVE YEAR WITH A VARIETY OF CULTURAL PROGRAMME
Sur, Oman; September 11: With their counter parts the world over, Malayalee Community in Sur celebrated Onam, the harvest festival of Kerala, for the third consecutive year with a variety of cultural programme.
The final phase of the Onam celebration concluded at Sur Beach Hotel Auditorium on 09th September 2004, Thursday.
The function began with a welcome address by Onam Celebration Committee General Convenor Kanakan, presided over by Programme Convenor V.P. Ramachandran.
Accompanied by traditional Kerala art forms like Onapottan, Pootham, Chendavadyam, Kelikottu .. symbolic Mahabali inaugurated the programme. He then distributed prizes to the winners of Art/Literal competitions conducted at Sur Club on 27th August 2004, Thursday.
Later, Group Song, Kathaprasangam, Comedy Skit ("Telemix" & "Aanamedham"), Classical Dance, Folk Dance, Cinematic Dance, Mohiniyattom, Oppana, Thiruvathirakali, Jugal Bandhi, Ganamela, Tablo, Ottamthullal, Nrithamalika ("Mahabali"), Sangeetha Shilpam ("Bharathamennu kettal"), An old song's facial expression ("Gathakala Smarana") and other art forms were performed in front of a packed audience.
In view of participation and artistic talents, the Pookkalam competition conducted on 27th August could maintain high standard. The judges too appreciated the participants and praised them for the pain taken in presenting such a wonderful Pookkalam. Three team won the second parize. Drawing competition for children and poem recitation for all and other competitions like Idli eating, biscuit eating and balloon blasting were conducted as part of the Onam celebration.
Whatever the individual perception towards Onam, it gives an opportunity to Malayalees community particularly the Parvasis to gather together and reminisce the past and enjoy for some time from their monotonous and isolating life.
Children whose talents are largely confined on the walls of Indian School got an opportunity to express their artistic talents before a big audience. Some children who are less fortunate to have regular classes, but staying with their parents and undergoing private tuition as part of the liberalized family visa rules too got an opportunity to participate in various competitive and cultural programmes.
To a certain extent, competitions like Pookkalam (Flower carpets) and Poem recitation could bring back the losing affection towards mother tongue among Non Resident Keralites.
Although Malayalee Community had celebrated Onam in Sur in the past as well, it is the third consecutive year they celebrated Onam such a large scale, remaining within their limitations, said the organizers.
