|Intimate Conversation with S. J. Foster
S. J. Foster, a Philadelphia native who has also lived in Texas, Ohio and currently Georgia, is a wife, mother, a reality show addict, and an extremely avid reader and passionate writer. This is her second novel. Writing is my passion and I already have written in my mind my next 5 novels – in sequence.
Ella: Tell us about your passion for writing. Why do you write? What drives you?
I began writing because I’ve always had a very vivid imagination, possibly from being an only child the first 9 years of my life. The characters I write about are people I know in my mind, typically people I’ve mentally had friendships or relationships with! I spend a decent percent of each day inside my head so late at night, when I do most of my writing; I put those daydreams on paper.
Ella: Please finish this sentence: My writing offers the following legacy to future readers...
FAPulousness! This is a term I coined which truly defines my writing. It stands for Fashion, Action & Passion! All of my works – published and soon to be – fall under this style as it represents the types of works I like to read and write about. Champagne & Butterflies is meant to provide light hearted chick-lit drama and fun reading. My previous novel as well as my follow up to Champagne & Butterflies are darker and much more serious but they still follow the FAPulous variety. I’ve also described my works not as books – but as literary experiences.
Ella: Where are you from? What is your favorite genre? How did you start your writing journey?
I’m from Philadelphia although I currently reside in the Atlanta area. My favorite genre is any fiction that includes spice and juicy drama. I started writing as a hobby. I write lots of poetry and short stories that I once only shared with family and friends. After a while, their friends and their friends’ friends were requesting copies of my work, encouraging me to finally take a stab at publishing. I haven’t looked back since!
Ella: Share with us the synopsis of the book being discussed today, Champagne & Butterflies.
Collegiates Kyla and Kimari Fontaine are the affluent stars of Champagne & Butterflies, a “coming of age” story that will dazzle the young female reader as surely as a new pair of strappy stilettos. Champagne & Butterflies takes a lighthearted, chick lit glance at young adulthood. Since both heroines are young, gorgeous and wealthy African-Americans, this drama mixes hip style and urban glamour with enough fashion, action, and passion to enthrall any reader smitten with the jet set ways of today’s label wearing culture.
Raised by father Benjamin, the well-respected CEO of the nation’s largest brokerage firm, and mother Farrah, a former model and popular singer, Kyla and Kimari certainly live a life of privilege. Sometimes dubbed by classmates as the “Black Hilton sisters,” they blaze a popular path having graduated from a prep school in the tony suburbs of Philadelphia to the campus of Penn State, especially when behind the wheel of a Range Rover and convertible Lexus.
Just one year apart in age, sharp-tongued Kimari, who was previously ready to shake her small town ‘It Girl’ status and conquer the globe, finds herself trying to hold onto a relationship with a semi-famous, soon-to-be pro football player while working to get her own star to rise.
Meanwhile Kyla, the calm, collected and considered the more reserved of the two, finds herself in a great relationship with Vince, a safe and loving resident doctor. Ever the overachiever, Kyla buries herself in work to try to shake her lingering feelings for an enticing old flame.
Seen through the eyes of designer clad glasses, both privileged sisters are about to discover who they truly are while experiencing growing pains like never before.
Ella: Who are your two main characters and what do you like most about them?
Sisters Kyla and Kimari Fontaine are the main two characters of this novel. They are young, beautiful and privileged but of course, very human. Kyla, the responsible, well-put-together overachiever is likeable in her reserved innocence. She doesn’t like cheating, lying or anything dishonest. Of course, this gets tested before long but her purity is lightly comical as well as admirable.
Kimari, the sharp-tongued firecracker of the two, is bold and sassy. She has an undying desire to reach a certain level of fame beyond her immediate life; and this sometimes clouds her vision. Her overtly honest and audacious comments will make readers laugh as well as make their jaws drop.
Ella: How does this book shape or add value to the reader's life?
It’s pure and fun entertainment. I totally believe in escapism and this novel is a fun getaway from everyday life. There are the labels for my fashionista’s, there’s heat with the male counterparts for my steam lovers and finally there’s a good old fashioned moral to the story.
Ella: What advice would you give a new writer?
Be true to your craft. Don’t try to write what you think folks want to read; write what you love and what you would want to read. That way there’s more genuine quality and readers will draw to that.
Ella: What can we expect from you in the future?
Novels! Novels! Novels! I continue to write poetry and short stories, which I’ll be posting on my website and blogs. I also write songs so I’m actively seeking new artists to give me the honor of writing for them. And finally, my 3rd, yet to be titled novel is practically writing itself which thrills me!
