Feather Schwartz Foster, author of “LADIES: A Conjecture of Personalities” will be discussing “Julia Tyler: The Rose of Long Island” at a First Ladies Tea at the prestigious Presidents Park in Williamsburg, VA. The tea party, combined with the lecture and a book signing, will be held at 2 PM on Saturday, December 5, 2009. The cost is $19 per person.
According to the author, “Julia Tyler was a spoiled, very rich New Yorker, who at age twenty-four, eloped with a sitting President. Her tenure as First Lady was fairly brief, less than a year, but it was brilliant and spectacular. Later she became an adopted ‘Daughter of Dixie” and was an ardent Confederate sympathizer. “
According to Foster, “Ladies: A Conjecture….” is a book of voices. In it, First Ladies between Martha Washington and Mamie Eisenhower tell their own stories – or, to be more exact, whatever they want – in their own words and in their own styles. It crosses boundaries between fact, conjecture and, most importantly, centuries. Through dialogue-boxes, the Ladies talk to each other across Eternity, where anything is possible. The Modern First Ladies, from Mrs. Kennedy through Mrs. Clinton participate in commentary. “The old gals talk to the reader and they talk amongst themselves. They talk about their husbands, and their children, and the White House, and the times they lived in. And, of course, politics
The First Ladies Tea Party is planned as a series of monthly First Ladies Teas to be given at Presidents Park. Different First Ladies will be featured each month – and several other related events are also planned for the venue. .259.1121757.259.1121
