Thoughts:

Dark

I grew up with an interest in dark places-Is it only in us catholic boys? The low mountains of New Hampshire are full of fast running brooks that rumble down/under/aside steep cliffs and many of these primeval spots have grottos and caves in them. In Sanbornton (those B&W childhood days!) a few cracks in a high cliff led deep into the darkness; naturally the bravest of us plumbed these depths. Later, I felt the same unnatural creepiness in the Lincoln & Holland Tunnels and the subway.

A couple of weeks ago, up by Claremont, we crossed the Connecticut River over one of those long covered bridges that still endure. The eerie dread that ( for me ) permeates caves and tunnels wasn’t there; the light wasn’t as bright as the traffic tunnels in NY and Boston, but the atmosphere induced none of the claustrophobic spine-tingling deep-core misery…could it be that it’s because of the manufacturing material?

I grew up in the woods; My father and my brother made their living working wood; I have always been a hatchet kind of a carpenter-enjoying the rustic, dismayed by the polish-,aghast at what lacquer and varnish do to the feel –and smell- of the wood.

Maybe I have it wrong. Maybe I won’t figure it out. Maybe knowing how being in a wooden cave over a few hundred miles of water made me feel is enough. I can live with that.

The Bonsai Tree

The bonsai tree

in the attractive pot

could have grown eighty feet tall

on the side of a mountain

till split by lightning.

But a gardener
