I have long been intrigued by the difference between History and Memoir. By all conventional standards, Charles Mumph, by the end of his life had “made it”–had achieved a fair amount of overt success and had many creature comforts. But there was a residue of deep level sadness to his life that left him self–absorbed. He was unable to get outside himself enough to clearly see his place, historically as the last in a grand line of Mumphs. His should have been a history of his people – the Mumph Legacy. Instead it became a Memoir of squandered life.
