Elementary students in Marquette, Michigan, participated in a workshop on creative writing given by Deborah K. Frontiera through the City of Marquette's Community Arts and Culture Center on the lower level of the Peter White Public Library. The workshop ran from 10 AM to 2 PM on June 19, 2009. Frontiera used three different writing prompts to guide the students who will enter grades three through six this fall. First, they wrote and illustrated cinquain poems in which they compared themselves to a favorite animal. The next step involved developing a short story in which they imagined that they woke up one morning as that animal. Several students illustrated their stories. After lunch, Frontiera guided the students in writing Haiku poems in resonse to photographs taken in the marsh near where Frontiera spends her summers. Students shared their writing with each other and allowed Frontiera to take pictures of their works (each kept their original copies) so that she might share their poems with other students when she returns to Houston's Writers In The Schools program during the 2009/10 school year. The cinquain in the photo with this article was written by a student who will be in third grade this fall.
