The North Texas Book Festival organizers announced the winners of this year's book awards at the annual Book Trails dinner on April 20, 2007, at the Greater Denton Arts Council building in Denton, TX. The winner for the children's division was Frontiera's book, Eric and the Enchanted Leaf: A Visit with Canis Lupis. Frontiera said, "It is truly a thrill to receive this award and recognition of my work. I know that young children learn best when they have a good story, so I sneak the facts in the back door. My books do for pre-k and primary age children what The Magic School Bus did for the upper grades." The festival's awards were given to Texas authors whose books were published independently or by small presses. Organizers feel it is time to give these excellent works more recognition. They commented on the many high-quality books entered both in the children's and the adult division. Judges had a hard time deciding and it came down to tenths of a point. One judge tipped the balance in favor of Frontiera's book with solid 10's down the rating sheet and added the comment, "Excellent for all elementary age kids. My kindergarten class loved it as did a third grade class that was studying wolves." Frontiera's first picture book, Eric and the Enchanted Leaf: The First Adventure, was an honor book for the Golden Spur Award from the Texas State Reading Association in 2005. The aim of the series is to help young children learn about the environment through fantasy, their best medium. Children enjoy a good adventure and learn real things along the way.
