Clive Cussler's Verdict on Scarborough Fair
Saturday, September 17, 2011  8:29:00 AM

by Chris Scott Wilson

Historical Fiction
Scarborough Fair by Chris Scott Wilson is reviewed by bestselling author Clive Cussler.

Clive Cussler is an expert on Bonhomme Richard, the ship John Paul Jones commanded at the Battle of Flamborough Head during the American War of Independence. It was just south of Scarborough, off the Yorkshire coast that Jones became the US navy's first great hero. After the hard-fought sea battle, Jones moved his flag onto the captured HMS Serapis when it was deemed Bonhomme Richard was in no state to stay afloat. The next morning she sank, to become one of the great lost wrecks of maritime history. In 1978, Clive Cussler financed his first expedition to find Richard, and he has been looking ever since. Who better to review Scarborough Fair, Chris Scott Wilson's novel of Jones's navigation through the chicanery of French politics and his rise to Commodore and his courage, grit and determination so bravely displayed at Flamborough Head as he fought shoulder to shoulder with his crew for America's freedom.

Clive wrote to Chris, 'Scarborough Fair is a terrific story. You have a beautiful way with words. Of course, you English always had a better command of the language than we Colonists. The Serapis and Bonhomme Richard battle was always a great adventure tale and you did it proud.
