"Sara Pennypacker" Article Excerpt

Children's author and creator of the rambunctious Clementine (working with, not against, a child's high-energy spirit) ...

"Clementine" is a little book with a lot of heart. For starters, Pennypacker has used actual incidences that happened to her kids when they were Clementine's age (eight). Such incidences include naming a cat Moisturizer, one of the beautiful names -- only to be found in the bathroom. Another incident involved showing one's younger siblings what "going for a walk" means via spinning the sibling in a Chinese wok! Because of the book's uniquely-flawed heroine, "Clementine" has received three-starred reviews from Kirkus, Publisher's Weekly, and School Library Journal ...

When asked what inspired her to create Clementine, she says she had been writing the "Stuart" ("Stuart's Cape" and "Stuart Goes to School") children's book series when the illustrator, Martin Matje, died in 2004 at the age of 42.

"I'd loved 'Stuart's' third-grade audience and wanted to create the opposite character. Stuart worried about everything. Clementine worries about nothing," she explained ...

Clementine's author is paying attention, close attention, to the right things, which brings us to the juiciest news in Pennypacker's life.

"A movie production company has shown interest. We've had preliminary talks about a possible feature film," she shares.
