Hip Hop Community Says The Children of New Orleans Need Us Now!

8/2/2006 10:48:00 AM

by Nordette Adams

What will you do to help?
The following message comes from Rev. Lennox Yearwood Jr., Hip Hop Caucus, Chief Executive Officer (CEO)

We need your help! We cannot give up!

Please forward this message to everyone you know...

We desperately need school supplies for students in New Orleans...

The Gulf Coast Renewal Campaign has partnered with the Congressional Black Caucus; in preparation for their forthcoming trip to New Orleans, Louisiana on August 9-10, 2006, to collect school supplies to deliver to some of the most poorly resourced schools in the hurricane-affected areas. The dates of the donation drive are July 31 through August 4.

If you are in DC or traveling to DC, then follow the directions immediately after this paragraph. If you are not in DC nor will you be traveling to Capitol Hill, then click here.

If you are traveling to Capitol Hill in Washington DC to visit offices, please pass by any of the following Congressional Black Caucus offices designated as drop-off locations to donate schools supplies or other items that the youngest survivors from one of this nation's most horrific natural disasters can use to get their new school year started off on the best possible foot.

Suggested supplies to donate:
  • Backpacks
  • Books (ages 6-16)
  • Lined loose leaf paper
  • Pencils/Pens
  • Erasers
  • Crayons
  • Scissors
  • Folders
  • 1" three ring binders
  • Staplers
  • Rulers
  • Glue sticks
  • Lunch boxes

The following offices will have clearly-marked bins:
Rep. Artur Davis - 208 CHOB
Rep. Cynthia McKinney - 320 CHOB
Rep. Kendrick Meek - 1039 LHOB
Rep. Donna Christensen - 1510 LHOB
Rep. Carolyn Kilpatrick - 1610 LHOB
Rep. Barbara Lee - 1724 LHOB
Rep. William Jefferson - 2113 RHOB
Rep. Mel Watt - 2236 RHOB
Rep. Maxine Waters - 2344 RHOB
Rep. Bennie Thompson - 2432 RHOB

For those not in DC, people could send supplies directly to the Hip Hop Caucus office after collecting them around the country:

    Hip Hop Caucus
    1112 16th St. NW, Suite 600
    Washington, DC 20036

Click here for list of supplies.

    Thank you.
