Phonm Penh, Cambodia-the restless city...
Tuesday, July 17, 2001  10:21:00 PM

by Leonie J Campbell

"Author, Leonie Campbell travels widely thoughtout South East Asia, gathering material for new story ideas. She is currently writting a mystery/thriller, based on information she has collected over the last two years. Phomn Penh, Cambodia has been her home since early June and she intends to travel to Laos and Vietnam during late July returning to Sydney in early August."

"I sit in my office and listen to the scream of sirens as the president,Hun Sen's cavacade races past in the street below. He is surrounded by the military might of soldiers arms with automatic weapons and the police on their motorcycles, watchful for any sign of danger to their leader.Cambodia is restless; there will be commune elections in February, 2002 and political killing have already begun. The opposition, unless they keep a low profile will be eleminated; justice is swift and deadly here. The people are friendly, but wary of strangers- their friendship is valued by the author who understands their troubled past. The splendors of Angkor Wat and Bayon are overwhelming- the mystic and spirituality of the people and temples lingers in you mind. This country is gradually overcoming the last coup; slowly the economy is improving, the tourists are returning- the dollars flowing into the UNPD and Aid projects again. There is still poverty in the provinces- many main roads are pot-holed and the dust covers everything. But slowly aid is forthcoming and the projects and donors are working at improving the standard of living for these patient people. Cambodia is worth visiting- the Royal Palace is a creation of golden spires and ornate carving- the Cambodians welcome tourists who are interested in their culture and wish to experience life in South East Asia."
