Review to my articles

by Maria Cristina Azcona

Dearest Maria Cristina Azcona,

Please allow me to apologize for my delayed response.  I'm afraid that I
have been overwhelmed with emails over the last months!  I beg your pardon.

Thank you so much for forwarding your article on "Dignity and Humiliation
in Argentina"!!  It is a powerful discussion of the historical antecedents
and continuing conditions that perpetuate demoralizing feelings of
humiliation in Argentina.  Your paper clearly describes how degrading
practices can remain "fixed" in a society, locking hard-working
individuals out of a better life.

I am particularly interested in how "elites" escape full responsibility
and accountability for actions that have inflicted devastating humiliation
on the middle-class and the poor.  You offer a heartbreaking account of
this dynamic, dearest Maria.  Might I have permission to share your paper
with colleagues who might be interested in your discussion?

As you probably know, the dynamic of privileging elites is common practice
in the US.  It seems those who have wealth, prestige, or power are granted
special allowances, even when their actions are clearly reprehensible and
all-too-often deadly.

Lately, I have become interested "self-justifying thinking and behavior,"
which seems to explain how elites rationalize or become oblivious to the
impact of their actions. A popular book published in the US just recently
explores this topic:

Tavris, C. and E. Aronson (2007). Mistakes were made, but not by me: Why
we justify foolish beliefs, bad decisions, and hurtful acts. Orlando, FL,

In the book, the authors make the point that human beings are hard-wired
for self-justifying thought.  This leads to blind spots in our logic and
behavior. But, these blind spots can and should be corrected.

If you are interested in this topic, you can listen to the authors of this

book by going to this web page:

Thank you again for sending me your wonderful paper, dear Maria!  Please
let me know if I have permission to share it with my colleagues.

Warm regards,

Linda M. Hartling, PhD
