| The Bottom Rail takes third place in the novel contest sponsored by the Dahlonega, GA literary festival. |
"The bottom rail done got to the top" is an old rural southern expression about "poor whites" rising up the economic ladder. The Carters, with a hostory of moonshining, murder, and rustling, move from depression poverty to the local mansion. the courthouse, and the sherif's office.
This expression comes from the tendency of poor farmers to repair a rail fence by moving the solid upper rail to the bottom when the bottom rail becomes weak, and putting the bottom rail on top.
