| Doe is thrust into one of the most baffling cases of her career involving three macabre murders, all found dismembered, wrapped in plastic packages in the rural town of Sunbury. Malloy's vineyard and the local tip become the areas of focus for Doe's investigation. Doe's new-found paranormal powers again assist her, as Eddie, one of the victims communicates with her at the tip, and describes his own death. When Eddie's last body part is found, he disappears before her eyes! Doe proceeds to investigate with only fragments of information, mixed with her ghostly knowledge from Eddie. |
"I . . . I'm dead!"
"Eddie . . . I . . . don't know what to . . ."
"But how can you see me? I mean, you can talk to spirits?"
"Yes . . . once."
"Really?"
"Yes. But we mustn't let anyone else know."
"Why?"
"I have my reasons."
"You must find . . . you know . . . the parcels . . . I can't rest until . . . " Eddie's form started to shimmer in the early dawn light. "I . . . I'm dead!" And suddenly Jane realised that he was almost transparent when he was confused, but solid when they talked.
"Eddie, we fully intend to find . . . to get them. Where do you think we should be looking?"
Eddie pointed to the far right of the current search area.
"I don't know why . . . but . . ."
"Thanks, Eddie. This chat's our secret . . . okay?"
"If that's what you want. No one else seems to be able to see or hear me anyway."
"Do you remember your surname?" Jane held her breath. But Eddie didn't respond. He just stood in front of Jane, his eyes scanning the area. Jane's mind was in overdrive.
A perfect witness! The victim! Goodness knows how I'll be able to use this information without revealing my ghostly chats.
