| Steve Burt of Norwich, Connecticut had one of those good news weeks most writers only dream about. On March 27 Writer's Digest called to say his book, A Christmas Dozen: Christmas Stories to Warm the Heart, had been named Honorable Mention in the Inspirational Books category of their Self-Published Book of the Year Awards. Once Burt came down from the ceiling, the caller told him he had doubled! His other entry, Odd Lot: Stories to Chill the Heart, had won the Honorable Mention in the Genre Fiction category. Then on April 1 (no joke here) the Ray Bradbury 2003 Short Fiction Competition folks called to tell him he had doubled there as well, with "Unk's Fiddle" taking Second Place and "The Praying Man" taking the Honorable Mention. Both short stories can be read free on authorsden.com. |
A Christmas Dozen had already been named a Book of the Year finalist in the ForeWord Magazine competition, and Odd Lot had won the silver Ben Franklin Award from Publishers Marketing Association for Best Mystery/Suspense Book of 2002, plus ForeWord's Honorable Mention for Best Horror Book of 2002.
