I am a member of the Harwich (MA) Cultural Council. Over the past several months the council has been working hard to gain approval at town meeting for the renovation of two unused buildings, i.e. renovations for a cultural arts center, the first of its kind in Harwich. The center was presented in conjunction with a plan for affordable housing on the same site. Happily, the wisdom of the town prevailed and all relevant articles passed. This is really exciting because two run-down buildings will be brought back to historical standards and cultural programs in the arts, humanities and interpretive sciences (for all ages) will be offered at great benefit to the heart and soul of the town. But, important work has yet to be done, including finding a non-profit organization to lease the building from the town and manage the programs and hopefully, we will be able to stimulate interest in donors who will come forward with financial support for this historic decision.
