American Ambition
Sunday, February 18, 2007  11:52:00 AM

by John H Allen

"So where is the President?" an extract from American Ambition.

US President Ken Finlay has gone to meet the 3 journalists who predicted that he would become President. But he has gone without his Secret Service bodyguards.

“So where is the President?” demanded Alec Lennox. The Presidential limousine was drawn up outside the hotel with the President’s chief bodyguard standing by it, but there was no sign of Finlay himself.
“He’s at a private meeting,” said Pataski as Lennox walked up to him.
“What kind of meeting?”
“I don’t know. My job is to be his bodyguard, not to arrange his meetings.” Pataski was trying to keep calm. He was following Finlay’s exact instructions which in this case didn’t quite match Secret Service Standing Instructions for the Continuous Protection of the Principal.
“Who is with him?” asked Lennox who was peering into the car as if Pataski was hiding him there.
“He’s on his own.”
“On his own? No bodyguard?”
“That’s what on his own means doesn’t it?” replied Pataski trying to maintain the correct degree of civility while stating the obvious.
“What about the go-codes. Who has them?”
“They’re in the car with the Commander.” Pataski gestured towards the naval officer who sat in one of the rear seats holding a black attaché case.
Lennox looked and sounded astonished, “so you don’t know where the President is and the go-codes are no where near him. Did Director Murdock sanction this?”
“Director Murdock doesn’t even know about this meeting. I’ve been instructed not to tell him.”
“Who is the President meeting with?”
“I told you I don’t know.”
“Then I suggest we better find the President right away. Get moving!” the older man opened the rear passenger door of the limousine and got in. Pataski went round to the front and got in beside the driver. “Where to sir?” he asked.
“To wherever the President is. Assuming you haven’t lost him altogether.”
