North Attleboro resident, Mark Dirschel recently signed with America House for publication of his horror novel, Simplicity. Not the first novel he has written, but the first one he attempted to publish, his dream of having a book in print has now become a reality.
“I started writing this book while I was in nursing school, at some point in ’96. Between work and school, it spent time on the shelf but I kept coming back to it. It’s a good story.”, he said. “Part of me still can’t believe I’m a published writer, but when I pick it up, feel it and smell it, I’m pretty psyched all over again.”
Mark was bitten by the horror bug at age 7 while watching a movie he wasn’t supposed to on television. He penned his first book at 12 and has been writing ever since.
“I’ve always liked to write – creative writing, though not technical or strictly structured pieces. Too confusing. The unique challenge Simplicity presented to me was the length of time it took to complete, followed by the rewrites and editing to get it publish-worthy. It turned out all right, I think. I’m happy with the final story.”
Simplicity is a vampire novel intent on carrying the reader deep into the mind and soul of the main character, a vampire named Patrick. Not always pretty and far from predictable, modern-day vampire tales, Simplicity explores the erosion of one’s humanity which is apparently inevitable following one’s death and subsequent undead rebirth. Life and death, good vs. evil, choices and consequences – love, hatred and the quest for apathy. These are the central elements of this novel. The result is pure horror.
“One thing I wanted to tackle with this book was a gap in the overall vampire legend. Sunset to sunrise, it’s no secret what a vampire is up to. Anyone who’s watched even one movie understands that part. It’s the hours after the sun rises that are never addressed, except when they’re done as a cheat.”
Simplicity is written according to classic vampire scripture. One thing Mark refused to do was rewrite or negate the time-honored story line of who and what the vampire is. He feels that manipulating the legend of a creature that has existed for centuries would be a cheat to the knowledgeable reader.
“The only thing I felt comfortable in expanding upon was the story of what happened to the vampire’s soul during the day. The soul animates the flesh by night and must leave the corpse by day. Where does it go? Hell, of course. And therein lies a tale inherently filled with horror. Hell is not a nice place and I did my best to create an uncomfortable visit.”
Mark and his beautiful wife, Tricia have lived in North Attleboro for the past two years with their two children – Nicholas, 4 and Jacquelyn, 2. Simplicity is available at the Richards Memorial Library to borrow and can be ordered from any and all on-line stores where books are sold.
