| Central Kansas Free Fair at Abilene a warm-up for the Kansas State Fair |
Jerry Engler was just "driving through town" a couple of weeks ago at Abilene, Kansas, when he had to join other traffic pulled over by local law enforcement officers as the Central Kansas Free Fair parade proceeded down Highway 15 in front of the motorists.
Engler, an author of the books Just Folks: Earthy Tales of the Prairie Heartland, and A Heartland Voice: Just Folks Two, decided to pull out of the traffic, and circle to the west side of town to see the fair.
While there, he visited with Deb Duckwall, head librarian at the Abilene Public Library, and the two of them decided he should come back to sign books for the public at the library booth sometime over the weekend.
Engler was at the booth meeting people and signing books all day Saturday. He said he hoped he helped attract more people to the library display.
He added that it was a good "warm-up" time for his appearances in the Book Kansas booth September 8-17 at the Kansas State Fair in Hutchinson. Engler set a new record in that booth two years ago selling the most books ever by a single author, 103 copies.
Suzi Lenker, owner of Book Kansas, said the 12-hour days Engler often puts in at the State Fair are tiring, but he never quits talking to people.
