| A visit to Iolani School kindergartners held some surprises! |
On April 27, 2006, I presented a book talk to 70 little wigglers, kindergartners at the prestigious Iolani School (which educated Sun Yat Sen, among many other illustrious people). The librarian, Linda Reser, had told me that they were writing books and were eager to hear from a real author how it was done.
(Note: I've had 15 books published, with 5 still in print, available in Hawaii bookstores and by contacting me.)
Now, I've helped Second and Third-graders with little books, but I've never heard of kindgertarnets writing them! I remember my kindergarten days which involved more building blocks and playing house than writing books.
The students were truly interested in where I get my ideas--most of them had had trouble getting started--and how I got the books in shape. I stressed the value of sharing ideas with others and letting others critique their work.
"My picture books are not poetry, but in a way they read like poetry," I explained. "There's a rhythm to them. If you read your story out loud and stumble on a word, it's probably not the right word for that sentence."
I explained that once they can use computers, particularly touch typing, they'll find revising much easier. Much to my surprise, I found they not only write stories, they're also using computers.
Surprise after surprise. Kindergarten, at least at Iolani, has come a long way.
