gold dust…

1. Fine particles of gold

2. (Analogy) Something precious or pure

1. An article in a publication that expresses the opinion of its editor or publisher

Welcome to the very first issue of Gold Dust magazine! We aim to promote exciting and original prose and poetry, while also featuring a range of articles on writing-related topics.

There are many, many literary magazines on the market already - why another? We founded Gold Dust because we wanted to offer readers the opportunity to discover work often overlooked from talented up-and-coming writers, as well as providing a showcase for more experienced writers. Our literary articles and interviews will be of interest to readers and writers alike.

In this issue, we have a diverse selection of poetry, ranging from the humorous to the bleak. Glen D. Lovelace, who spent 30-plus years in Japan, has contributed three poems, while Rose La Touche has written from the perspective of a very different culture - the West Indian one. Our three short stories are all wonderfully engaging, concerned, as they are, with issues of faith, whether relating to adultery (When You've Wished Upon A Plastic Star by Steven Dines), religion (Light of the World by David Gardiner), or the paranormal (What's in a Name? by Karl Relf). Also in this issue, we have two highly promising novel extracts for you to read (The Rainbow Maker by Mark Turley and A Tangle of Roots by David Hough), with purchase details available for those who would like to read more. Finally, we have two enlightening literary articles, three writer interviews, and a witty and poignant piece of flash fiction for you to sink your teeth into.

Best Medicine

soul songs true and clear

from a belly-laugher's heart

keep life worth dying

Homo Sapiens

Born a loser; Born a loser:

Homo Sapiens.

We're so like the god who made the dodo bird!

Is it only 'cause we're stupid

We are losers,

Or's it because we think

We're so divine?

Do we spoil our home to complement our ego,

Or's this the way we explicate our shame?

Every vow that we make

In our pipe dream

's grand I-zation!

Are you bloody insane,

Homo Sapiens,

Or is ours just a young (still dumb)

SELF-seeking Brain?

Born a loser!

Born a loser?

Life Is Such

Life is such that it will live in water.
Life is such that it will grow in food.
Life is such that it will thrive in space.
Life is such that it will die in time.
Life is such that it will live again,
In water, food, space, and time.
