A Letter from a friend in Prison

I got a letter yesterday from someone who I was in prison with. She is serving a 30 year sentence - no possibility for parole - for killing a man who raped her. But that is another story....her letter upset me. They have a new chaplain at the prison and she is really discouraging the inmates. Inmates are "written up" (get in trouble) for shouting in church or praising God in any way that the chaplain deems inappropriate. She has told them that she is cutting out the church sponsored Christmas suppers that local churches do for each building because she wants the women to realize they are in prison and they should not get any treats or be allowed rewards like a good meal. Believe me when I tell you - those women KNOW where they are. They dont need anyone reminding them. They live it every day. She has just discouraged so many of the women who normally love to go to the church services. Church is a vital part of prison. Without it, you see more violence, more bad things. These women need a chaplain who tries to encourage them to change their lives, not discourage them. God is a loving God and he is forgiving. This woman has obviously lost sight of that. It is just sad that someone who is supposed to represent God is acting in this manner. I am going to post this information on some of the prisoner support groups websites that I belong to and hopefully something can be done.
