Mother and Son Become Best Selling Authors
Less than a month after Debra Shiveley Welch’s book, Son of My Soul – The Adoption of Christopher, hit the best seller’s list on Amazon.com, her 15-year-old-son followed suit.
Christopher’s book, Christopher Bullfrog Catcher, has also achieved best seller status on Amazon and Buy.com. According to Mrs. Welch, her son wrote the book when he was eleven-years-old and it was scribed by her. She says he worked very hard on it and calls his success nothing short of remarkable in light of the fact that he suffers from several learning differences including Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), Dysgraphia and has Working Memory and Executive Function Deficit. “I am totally ecstatic over what Chris has been able to accomplish!” says Mrs. Welch. “When he was three, I was told that he was incapable of learning. I refused to listen and now he is proving everyone wrong who said he couldn’t learn and wouldn’t amount to much.”
Christopher’s autobiography and second book, Just Chris, will be released this spring. Currently Christopher is working on Christopher Meets Buddy, a book on how to properly care for a pet bird, and as co-author with his mother on Christopher’s Family Table, a companion cook book to his mother’s best selling book Son of my Soul - The Adoption of Christopher which is a personal account of her struggles through loneliness, poverty and neglect, her triumph over a turbulent past, and the joy of mothering her adopted child.
In addition to writing, Christopher enjoys guitar, swimming, fishing and, of course, bullfrog hunting. His goal in life is to be a chef and a musician. He says “All kids should follow their dreams and don’t let others tell you that you can’t do it, even if you have learning differences. Focus, work hard, and say to yourself ‘There’s nothing you can do to stop me.’”
