by Eugene L. Meyer

For the second time in three years, Meyer's work has won recognition from the International Regional Magazine Association.

Eugene L. Meyer has won two bronze awards from the International Regional Magazine Association for columns and a feature story that appeared in Maryland Life in 2008. Meyer writes the "Hidden Maryland" column for the bi-monthly magazine. The award-winning columns were about Delmar, a "bi-state town" on the Maryland-Delaware border; U.S. Route 40 north of Baltimore; and Smith Island, which clings to its eroding land and lifestyle in the middle of Chesapeake Bay.

The feature story concerned the dwindling number of black watermen on the Chesapeake Bay.  Meyer's "Hidden Maryland" won IRMA's Gold Award for best column in 2007.

“I've enjoyed Gene's work with our magazine," writes Dan Patrell, editor and publisher of Maryland Life. "He consistently provides stories that are not only in demand by our readers -- it wins awards, as well, as recently demonstrated at the annual conference of the International Regional Magazine Association in 2009. His work is character-driven, truthful, and eye-opening. He knows how to get a story from a situation, and turn it into something that readers want to read.”

Since leaving the Washington Post in January 2004, Meyer has won seven citations from five writers organizations for his freelance work.
