It took an abundance of pain and hardship for Tess to finally realize that what doesn't kill her will make her stronger... ultimately guiding her to do what God was preparing her to do.
Chapter Fifteen
“How are you today, Senorita Tess?” Jose asked as he handed back her change. Tess had been coming into his bodega for years. He had witnessed a transformation in her. She was no longer the confident, vivacious woman that he had met years earlier. Tess was beautiful with her almond shaped brown eyes, her brilliant smile, and deep dimples. From the very first time that he saw her, he liked her. Now, she seemed so troubled, entirely drained of life. It baffled him why she drank so much and so often.
“Oh, you know me,” Tess replied, flashing a smile as counterfeit as her butt and thighs that were formed by wearing layers of clothing. “…same crap, different day.”
She grabbed the dollars and coins, turned, and headed out of the store. Tess liked Jose, but she dared not confide any of her personal business to him. She had learned the hard way about putting her private life on display.
How many times had she been hurt by coworkers’ vicious gossip? She remembered the time that a woman at work asked how she was doing. Thinking that this woman truly cared to know, Tess poured her heart out, tears and all.
The next thing Tess knew, people were coming up to her asking her about everything that she had disclosed to the woman. How could she betray her like that? Tess no longer trusted anyone. She did not have a soul at work who was a true friend. Everyone wanted something from her. They would come smiling in her face, then stab her in the back... time and time again.
