Recently, a newspaper reporter interviewed me about my two newly released historical novels. We chatted about the difficulties of combining family life and a day job with creative writing. The two novels lying on the table in front of us as we talked represent years of my life. WOMEN OF MAGDALENE, an adult novel, deals with misogyny and racism in the post-Civil War South. JULIETTE ASCENDING is a young adult coming-of-age story set in 19th century New Orleans. Both books required research and rewrites before they found wonderful publishing homes.
Though I love to write, it is not quick or easy for me; the Muse doesn’t give me dictation. When the reporter asked how I found time to research and write novels, I told her: I don't know. Maybe it isn’t a matter of finding time, but more a matter of not giving up. Maybe it's a combination of coffee, tea, and relentlessness.
