| In tribute to a legend who surpassed even that which is expected of a legend... |
Man of Iron, City of Steel
On the shores of three great rivers
In a city known for steel
Came a young lad from Wisconsin
With unwavering ideals
Fostered by a legend
He was anchor to the line
Through both pain and cold discomfort
Weather poor, weather fine
Sleeveless in December
Gridiron knowledge oh, so keen
Keystone lynchpin of an offense
The likes of which we’d never seen
Relegated to the shadows
Outshone by brighter, fleeter stars
Yet the standard for his teammates
Set by broken bone and scars
Always present in the highlights
Never mentioned by his name
His, the block that sprung swift Franco
Or that saved Bradshaw’s blond mane
Never one to wear his heart out
On the sleeves he seldom wore
Quiet, driven, unassuming
Bleeding football from his core
Later years found him the teacher
Wizened veteran still could give
To a team and to a city
Where his legend ever lives
Many foes to him had fallen
On the emerald field of play
When the Hall of Fame came calling
Mike Webster finally had his day
Now sleep, you gentle giant
Take the rest you have so earned
Have no fear that we’ll forget you
In our hearts your name is burned
