Morgan DeLaney goes to the Caribbean to work for a friend while he is on vacation. Murder, mystery and mayhem abound as DeLaney discovers that several cases of "accidental death" are apparently anything but accidental and may even be related!
They had rented a catamaran for a month and were sailing the islands. Earlier in the day, the wives had flown ahead to St. Thomas, their next destination, to get a head start on shopping and the gentlemen had decided to take one last snorkel before heading over with the boat. Apparently, Mr. Davies had tired and gone onboard to shower while his friend, Hollings, stayed in the water. When Davies came back on deck, he didn’t see his friend Hollings. But, didn’t think much of it and proceeded to make tea for the two of them, thinking that Davies would soon join him. After a short while, he began to worry and started searching the water. He took the binoculars from the wheel house and looked about. On the rocky shoals, he could see Hollings clinging to a group of rocks. His snorkel was gone and he held onto a craggy gray-brown rock with his head barely above the crashing waves. Davies jumped in and swam toward his friend. As he reached the rocks he could see that Hollings was struggling to breathe and keep his grasp on the sharp and pointed rocks. “ ’I can’t……I can’t do it’, Hollings said as I reached him. And I put my arms around him and tried to hold up his head. My hands felt like they were slipping and I was losing my grip. His head went under and I released my arms to get a better hold. I got his head out of the water again and he said, ‘I’m tired….I can’t…’ and then another wave came and I…..I tried to hold him tighter but…I couldn’t. I just couldn’t do it. I was being thrown up against the rocks too and I couldn’t keep my grip.” Davies head fell to his chest and I could see the pain in his eyes. He closed his eyes and said again, “I tried to hold his head up but I just couldn’t manage…” Davies put his head in his hands and sighed deeply. I thought the sigh was for grief but it was not.
