Merrillville – Author Janice Beier is celebrating the release of her second children’s book, “Zebert the Rainbow Striped Zebra Meets Tilly the Tortoise,” which continues her series geared toward teaching children about diversity, acceptance and tolerance.
The story centers around Zebert and his friends helping Tilly uncover her own special talents and abilities after she tries her turn at soccer and realizes it’s not as easy as it looks. Outside of being entertained, Beier hopes a message shines through to readers.
“The lesson that I want (children) to take away from the story is that, like Tilly, although we may wish to have the abilities and/or talents that others possess, it is more important to figure out what we can do and be the best at whatever it is,” Beier said. “Of course, the underlying lessons in all of my books are friendship, celebrating diversity and promoting acceptance and tolerance.”
Beier’s summer schedule includes book readings with the Merrillville Parks Department and Good Shepherd Daycare & Preschool in Crown Point, she has also launched a summer reading book club through her Web site, www.rainbowsinkbooks.com. Children receive a gift bag with the purchase of a book and are entered to win a Zebert plush toy.
Beier said that from book No. 1 she knew Zebert’s tale would keep growing.
“I had always planned to make Zebert into a series. I’ve already started working on book three and I have ideas for several more,” she said. “My plan is to keep on writing, every chance I get. My goal is to come up with tons of ideas and produce as many books as I can for as long as I can.”
