CBC North Anniversary

1/30/2009 7:24:00 PM

by Valdemar (Val) R Wake

CYFK the scene of some of the action in White Bird Black Bird celebrates its 50th anniversary of broadcasting.
White Bird Black Bird is the story of a young journalist who goes north to work for CBC Northern Service and starts reporting about the native rights movement in the north. The story is based on the experiences of the author Val Wake who spent four years in the Arctic working at CFYK Yellowknife. Although Val insists that none of the characters in his novel are based on real people many of the settings and events are historically correct. The action of much of the story is based at the radio station which is now celebrating its 50th year of broadcasting. Find out more about this pioneer broadcast service in the north by going to www.cbc.ca/news/north. You can listen to their regular programming.
