Entries for this year's $5,550 Margaret Reid Poetry Prize will close at midnight USA Pacific time on Saturday, June 30. Snail mail entries must be postmarked no later than July 2.
This year we will accept all entries that have the appearance of POETRY, and not prose. We will be tightening up the rules next year, but this year we will accept all verse except prose poems.
The First Prize is $3,000 cash.
In all, this tenth annual contest offers $5,550 in cash prizes.
The $5,800 Tom Howard Contest for Verse in All Styles and Genres will not close until September 30.
Both these contests are detailed at http://poetrycontests.exactpages.com. Despite the small differences, Tom Howard is by far the more popular contest. We often receive DOUBLE the number of entries for Tom Howard. One reason, of course, is that Tom Howard is open for a longer period of time.
You'll also find full details of both contests at http://www.winningwriters.com
Entry fees for both contests are $8 for every 25 lines of poetry. There is no limit on the length of poems.
I detail seven poetry submission errors in my little booklet "Poetry Pitfalls or What Makes Bad Verse Worse (Essential Writers' Guidebooks)
", an essential 99 cents guide from Amazon. I've not the space to discuss these problems here, but you'll find them listed at the above link. This e-book will be available FREE on JULY 7 and JULY 8.
For writers of humorous verse, I'd draw your attention to my own anthology, "Nibbles of Nonsense", as a source of ideas. E-books of "Nibbles of Nonsense" will be available FREE on July 6, 7 and 8.
