This year, the prize pool will be $5,250 (including a First Prize of $2,000), yet entry fees for the Poetry Contest remain pegged at $6 for every 25 lines.
The Tom Howard Contest is known as the contest with NO RESTRICTIONS.
Unlike most other poetry contests, there are no restrictions on the number of poems you may submit, no restrictions on the length of poems, and no restrictions on previous publication or even verse that has won prizes in other competitions (provided you are able to give permision to publish your poem online). Although it's certainly not the only way to enter the winners' circle, I recommend taking a look at some of the entries that have won prizes in previous contests. This will give you some idea of the types and varieties of poems that have won prizes in the past. There is, however, one particular genre the judges would like to encourage: Humorous and comic verse. Many other Contests frown on humorous verse, but the Tom Howard Contest not only encourages such submissions, but awards prizes for poetry that is really funny.
The latest anthology of prize-winning poetry is "Sailing in the Mist of Time". Despite its sub-title, "Fifty Award-Winning Poems", this beautifully printed, large format book actually contains 106 prize-winning poems, including the 50 major award winners.
The 194-page anthology retails direct from the publisher for $16.50. Currently, however, it is "on special" at Amazon and some other stores for only $9.95.

Even if you've been discouraged in previous Contests, always keep in mind that the more you write, the more you'll succeed!
