Movie Westerns: Hollywood Films the Wild, Wild West will delight "western" aficionados no end. This is genuine John Wayne/Gene Autry territory, complete with poster and lobby card reprints.
In all, 74 westerns are reviewed in John Howard Reid's inimitable fashion, listing all the actors, not just the main stars; the production teams; copyright dates; release dates in the USA, England and even Australia. Of course, there are also critics' comments and a story synopsis. Plus 52 great illustrations, many of them full page.
As a bonus, JHR also lists the top western money-making stars from 1936 (when the poll of cinema exhibitors commenced) right through to 1954, when the survey ceased. It is interesting that Dale Evans was the only female star ever to make these lists. She was voted into 9th place in 1947!
As usual, JHR's research is very thorough. For example, the review of the 1940 Tyrone Power version of The Mark of Zorro also lists all the "Zorro" movies since 1920, as well as the Republic serials and "Zorro on TV".
Obviously, many well-known films are listed and reviewed, but there are also many lesser or under-appreciated movies in this fabulous volume. This book is a "must"!
And for a large-format book of 272 pages, the asking price is only $14. A real bargain!
