Judging for the Prose Contest is proceeding smoothly. Emails have already been sent to all entrants who figure on the preliminary Short List. Later this month, the judges should be in a position to email entrants who have progressed to the Final Short List. Prizewinners will be announced, as advertised, on September 15, 2009.
Just a reminder that the Tom Howard Poetry Contest for Verse in All Styles and Genres is open for submissions until September 30, 2009. Prize money will total $5,350, including a First Prize of $2,000.
There are no restrictions on the number of poems, the length of poems, or the genre of poetry you may submit. And genres do include prose poems. I'm often asked what is a prose poem or, as it's often called, a narrative or a storoem. The best way to answer this is to give an example. It's one of my own, so I'm not breaking anyone's copyright by printing it here:
CHRISTMAS ISN'T CHRISTMAS
Christmas is a trying time. Last year was no exception.
I'm talking about the traditional family re-union in all
its glories of cotton-wool snow, plastic trees, multi-
colored baubles and yuletide stars. I'm talking about
the need to feed family freeloaders traditional fare of
puddings and roasts, jelly and ham. I'm talking about
the last-minute rush to Walmart to buy gifts for half-
forgotten relatives or friends of friends. I'm talking
about all the cards clogging my mail-box for weeks
on end – all of which have to be returned. I'm talking
about unexpected guests and hordes of presents that
inevitably disappoint: clothes too small, toys
that break, clocks that refuse correct time and
watches that won't run at all. Yes, Christmas
is one trying time. What would we do without it?
To repeat: Total prize money of $5,350 includes a First Prize of $2,000, a Second Prize of $1,000 and a Third Prize of $500. There are 15 cash prizes in all.
Entry fee is $7 for every 25 lines (or part thereof). THERE IS NO LINE LIMIT.
THERE ARE ALSO NO LIMITS ON THE NUMBER OF POEMS YOU MAY SUBMIT.
We will accept both unpublished verse and published verse (so long as you are able to give us permission to publish your winning poem on the Winning Writers website).
If you wish to check out "Sailing in the Mist of Time", our anthology of previous winning and commended entries, this beautifully printed, large format book which usually retails for $16.50, is still being vigorously promoted at Amazon and other stores for only $9.95.
