A reminder that the Tom Howard Poetry Contest for Verse in All Styles and Genres will close on September 30, 2009. JUST TWO MONTHS LEFT! Prize money will total $5,350, including a First Prize of $2,000.
There are no restrictions on the number of poems, the length of poems, or the genre of poetry you may submit. And genres do include prose poems.
Regarding the lengh of poems, we do receive a large number of short poems which frankly have little chance of success in a contest of this size. If a poem is short, it must really strike home. It has to make an impression. Here, for example is a poem, "My City", by James Weldon Johnson. It's out of copyright. Professor Johnson died in 1938, so it's okay to reprint it here.
When I come down to sleep death's endless night,
The threshold of the unknown dark to cross,
What to me then will be the keenest loss,
When this bright world blurs on my fading sight?
Will it be that no more shall I see the trees
Or smell the flowers or hear the singing birds
Or watch the flashing streams or patient herds?
No. I am sure it will be none of these.
But, ah! Manhattan's sights and sounds, her smells,
Her crowds, her throbbing force, the thrill that comes
From being of her a part, her subtle spells,
Her shining towers, her avenues, her slums--
O God! the stark, unutterable pity,
To be dead, and never again behold my city.
Now there's a poem that says something. A poem with power. A poem that stirs the imagination. You'll find many poems of similar caliber, both long and short, that have won prizes in this Contest in the past. I'd love to reprint them here, but I cannot as they are copyright. However you can read them all in our published anthologies such as "Sailing in the Mist of Time". Please click the link ten or twelve lines below:
Total prize money of $5,350 includes a First Prize of $2,000, a Second Prize of $1,000 and a Third Prize of $500. There are 15 cash prizes in all.
Entry fee is $7 for every 25 lines (or part thereof). THERE IS NO LINE LIMIT.
THERE ARE ALSO NO LIMITS ON THE NUMBER OF POEMS YOU MAY SUBMIT.
