State of Jefferson: Then & Now, on SALE
Monday, February 25, 2008  11:00:00 AM

by Gail L. Jenner

History
The second book about the State of Jefferson, which SHOULD have been created out of parts of northern CA and southern OR, is now on sale. Hundreds of historical photos, enticing history, a great gift book or fun book to peruse.

The State of Jefferson was born in the hearts of pioneers who crossed craggy peaks and treacherous canyons to settle near the Oregon and California border. Isolated and feeling neglected by both state governments, they tried to create a new state as early as 1852. The persistent State of Jefferson movement finally received national attention, including articles in TIME and LIFE magazines, and held a boisterous election of county/state officials in 1941, days before being derailed by the onset and priorities of World War II. But solidarity and independence still run like underground springs in the border counties, where rugged individualism matches the often rugged terrain. With Mt. Shasta, the wild rivers of the Klamath, Rogue, Salmon, and others, and with the mountain peaks of the Cascades, the Marble Mt. Wilderness Area, and other natural wonders as part of the emotional and physical landscape, is it any wonder the people here see themselves as slightly 'different'? Check out IMAGES OF THE STATE OF JEFFERSON and THE STATE OF JEFFERSON: THEN & NOW, both published by Arcadia Publishing, by Bernita Tickner and Gail Jenner.
