EXTRACTS FROM THE BOOK:

One hundred smiling paratroopers lined up to receive their certificates for graduating from the 82nd Airborne Division of the United States Army. Sean was among them. With a big grin he saluted his commanding officer and accepted the piece of paper. Wearing his maroon beret and dress greens, he smiled at his mother and sister Susan who had come to the graduation. His father had refused to go or acknowledge that his son was a paratrooper – and that he had gone against his wishes and joined the 82nd Airborne. Now, for sure he would go to Viet Nam.

She had been in Bobby’s apartment for hours, waiting for the call that was supposed to come in around seven. When eight o’clock arrived and there was no call Molly was nervous, unable to eat any of the Chinese food Bobby had brought home. When the phone finally rang, Molly jumped up to answer. Bobby watched as all the color drained from her faced.
“The blood test is positive for pregnancy,” the nurse said, repeating herself when she got no response from the other end. She was the nurse who had drawn the blood and remembered the frightened look on Molly’s face.
