Offers Titillating List of Titles
The man who wrote the mother of all business books on Japan, in 1959, and went on to produce similar titles on China, Korea and Mexico, has joined the growing number of authors who have opted to go with the Internet as the publishing wave of the future.
Boye Lafayette De Mente gained international fame with the publication of “Japanese Etiquette & Ethics in Business” in 1959, and followed this landmark book with “How to Do Business With the Japanese” in 1961.
An American trade journalist stationed in Tokyo at that time, De Mente was editor of The IMPORTER magazine, and covered consumer products made in Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Singapore for the American, Canadian and European markets.
The two books -- the only how-to-do-business in Japan guides on the market for nearly 10 years -- became bestsellers among importers and foreign companies interested in Japan, making it possible for the author to retire from salaried employment in 1962 and began writing books full time.
Now a resident of Paradise Valley, Arizona and the author of more than 50 titles on the business practices, cultures and languages of China, Japan, Korea and Mexico, De Mente recently launched his own website, www.phoenixbookspublishers.com, which offers electronic editions of some 25 of his titles.
Several of the more unusual titles on the site are based on face-reading principles that De Mente learned in China and Japan, including “Face-Reading for Fun & Profit,” “Measuring the Sexuality of Men & Women by Their Facial Features,” and “Sexual Profiles of Famous People.”
Another series of books on the website are based on the cultural meaning and use of key words in Spanish and in the Hopi, Navajo, and Japanese languages.
One other title of special note on the site is “Poetry for the Soul,” which features selections from classic Western poetry and Japanese haiku and tanka in the categories of hope, humor, inspiration, love, morality and nature.
“Good poetry,” the author said, “has the power to calm, to heal, and to inspire, and should be an integral part of life.”
