| the new UFO story gets picked up by Specficworld.com |
First my Gothic Horror / Science Fiction story, Ghosts In The Tornado, gets accepted in Insomnia Magazine now the UFO short story Flying Cigars gets slated to appear on the speculative fiction website, http://www.specficworld.com, and this will also be appearing in the third TABLOID PURPOSES and my new short story collection, The Writings Collected: Volume II. I spoke some in a write up on here greatly of Ghosts in the Tornado, now it is time I mention Flying Cigars. Damn it is hard to believe, but cool as hell to hear about knowing this. Some of you had a chance to read this one as a limited email and instant messager release, but keep the story under your hat. You can mention the news in your own blogs too if you wish about this one especially if you've came to know my work as a science fiction author. It was written in tribute to a heavy metal guitarist I met back in 1996 named Denis D'Amour. When I picked up the CD that the track the title of the story came from, I knew I had to write the story -- and it was a challenge because the story was my first Science Fiction story that was under 17 pages in length, and shorter than the mid-length horror works I've been known to do in the recent years. This isn't a House of Spiders or a Lake Fossil, but there will be a story down the line that will cross the Lake Fossil characters with the Flying Cigars characters. This was accepted after a two month waiting period after it got rejected from two other magazines. Knowing this -- this was my second Science Fiction sale. My eight sale in general, but I was willing to even submit to this one to The Writers Post Journal for submission too even that I plan to send this one to Cicada and did. With that being said, I want to publically thank the editor for giving this story the well deserved chance it is getting. Like Terry Vinson's tribute to the old horror films, this story is also a tribute to those kind of films too plus it makes referrence to a lot of the old genre films in Science Fiction too. I am seeking an illustrator for this one, and inquire with the editor of the magazine to take the job. I am looking for an artist who can take after the comic influneces of Image Comics or the old independent comic books of the 1990's. It would be cool to see if I can find someone who would make this story into a comic book format and I could send it to the sci-fi comic book anthologies too. This is a little known fact about me, and some of who knew me from high school would know this -- from when I worked in the flea market I did start collecting comic books. Picked up a lot of horror ones too to boot, so with that being said -- I want to introduce this one in the sense of the word I learned how to do this style of science fiction from a few authors I came to know on AuthorsDen and on the web at large. They know who they are and I thank you for being such good mentors in this area. Science fiction as a genre of writing is one of the hardest to write in when it is set in the distant future, so I kept the genre closer to the time frame when I was a teenager thinking about how the characters would be if I knew them personally. Since a few there were actually based on my best friends in high school and middle school. Not too shabby for a story that I gave the editor of Tales of the Talisman a choice between two stories that he could use, he told me this story was cool but too G rated for the magazine so he went with a story I wrote titled The Typewriter. So one other editor told me that I would be too expensive to run on one magazine but told me to keep them coming, so here brings me to the current publication. They won't be running the story yet because they are setting up the featured fiction section, and this story will be part of that section once it is ready. I am even looking at places like Twilight Times for future stories too, thinking what can I come up with for them without writing something too vuglar. This story will be something I can actually let my kid sister read because she is asking what I do as a writer. There will be some free fiction available both here and on my main website, but I will also be making stories available only by purchase of books too which I did with Bleed The Freak, Utica, Storms of Armageddon, and all the sequels to Lake Fossil. For nearly 16 years I've been better known as a writer of Gothic Horror, and in the past two years I've crossed into writing Science Fiction. I've not written that many Science Fiction stories but each effort it becomes either a novellete or a novella length story, so here's the first story in this genre that is true to form as a short story. I had a hard time writing shorter fiction in sci-fi but still was a lot of fun to write. This is written entirely from a first person point of view of the main character who've seen the UFO from the observation deck of Sears Tower in Chicago, Illinois. I always thought New Mexico being a place for UFO sightnings, but my room mate made this startling observation that Morris, Illinois, was a place for them too -- so I figured have some fun with this by bringing into the Chicago area. If you want other aliens among us novels too that deal with this subject, check out The Everborn by Nicholas Grabowky. (His is set in California.) It was from reading this novel I started to see the gears turning for ideas of my own about the subject. You don't get to see the little tan men with the black insect like eyes in my story but you get to see the actual UFO as a glowing light then disappearing over a Chicago landmark, since writing this story I am looking more and more into movies that deal with UFOs and Aliens. Nicholas Mounts' story in Tabloid Purposes II is related to this too so go check out that one too.
