Hear What Circle Magazine Said About The Ultimate Test
Monday, September 29, 2003  12:30:00 PM

by Catherine A Schuett

Action/Thriller
Lisa Polisar from The Circle had this to say about Catherine Schuett''s The Ultimate Test.

Readers love surprises. Even more so, they love to be mentally toyed with. They'll never admit as much, insisting on shallow crutches like recurring characters and mindless spoon feeding of plot details, but in reality, we want to rise to a worthy challenge.

Catherine Schuett's novel, The Ultimate Test, starts with the irony of a serene, island picture on its cover. So from this image, can we assume that her story is about two young lovers who run away together on a deserted tropical island, or of an old woman seeking respite from the inner city? Think again. The villain, Antonio Cartillone, is an underworld mob boss straight out of "The Untouchables," who's motivated by the age-old tenet "revenge is a dish best served cold."

On the surface, The Ultimate Test is about a young man, Kyle Irons, who's haunted by a string of bad decisions and their catastrophic results. Digging deeper, though, this story studies the psychological effects of being trapped on an island, the sociological breakdown of relationships under those circumstances, and the primal need for escape and survival... at all costs.
