The first edition for My Splendid Concubine received excellent reviews in 2008. Pull quotes from those reviews are available at www.mysplendidconcubine.com . There was one negative review and that was published by The Beijing Youth Daily newspaper (an English language newspaper in China), controlled by the Communist Youth League (Circulation 600,000).
It is interesting to note that there is no mention of Robert Hart in the history books in China. Is it possible that the Chinese Communists feel it would be a loss of face to admit that an Irishman (1835 – 1913) was responsible for the building of China’s railroads; setting up China’s postal system; creating a functioning, efficient Customs service and helping to reorganize China’s educational system (still in use today) so China’s public schools could compete with Western industrialized nations?_________________________________________________________________________________
November 2008, Judge's commentary from Writer's Digest Self Published Book Awards about My Splendid Concubine (this comment was made for the 1st edition):
"I was struck by the beauty of the cover, and I certainly was not disappointed by the book's contents. A fascinating illumination of nineteenth-century Chinese culture and the complex Englishman Robert Hart, the father of China's modernization. Hart's struggles adapting to Chinese culture, always feeling the pull and force of his Victorian British background, are compelling. His relationships with his concubine and his concubine's sister are poignant--the novel is as much a study of the complexities of love as it is anything else. A powerful novel whose beauty exceeds that of the book's cover."
On a scale of 1 to 5, with 1 meaning "poor" and 5 meaning "excellent," the judge's evaluation of the following:
Plot: 5 Grammar: 5 Character development: 5 Cover design: 5
In addition to the new price, the second edition for My Splendid Concubine has a new cover and a new ISBN ( # 978-0-9819553-0-8 ). The second edition will be listed by Ingram in a few weeks.
