Michael J. Sullivan's Crown Conspiracy and Avempartha are a little lighter than many of the others on this list, but in the tradition of thief/hired-sword stories, there are none better. They feel more heroic than many in their genre (Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser), and it feels like the plot will thicken considerable after Avempartha.
