Reviews
Professional Book Review by Meeta Chaitanya Bhatnagar of Hindustan Times, July 19, 2003
Does the earth need saving? Are we truly headed towards an abysmal darkeness and annihilation of life ascertaining forces?

If one were to go by the very fascinating speculation of the author, C G McGovern-Bowen, Gaia, or earth would be seen as a truly valuable cosmic entity that must be saved from forces of disaster, at all costs. Even if it means, obliterating a huge mass from the human race.

EVIL SEED is a strikingly different read. Pacy and zany from the word go, this fast paced surreal adventure examines through its fictional authority, the validity of civilization on earth. Why should diminutive and vicious human beings be allowed to spread negative energy that plagues both Gaia and other inhabitants, the book questions. McGovern-Bowen draws upon her geographer's perspective to create a gargantuan global odyssey.

The fiery and resolute protagonist, Carlin Thornton-Kramer along with a disparate yet motivated group of friends including aliens and humans takes it upon herself to save Earth from the sinister clutches of the cosmic villian, the Evil One. The Evil One, we are told thrives on the villainy generated by a motley group of powerful and influential plunderers. These men have over the years played a key role as traitors and detractors to the Earth's progressive stridency.

Gaia awakens to the fact that she must save herself and her progeny from the deteriorating and regressive breed of men who have over time plundered all her goodness and are now out to destroy her utterly! She hopes to move towards a fine plane of existence, which nurtures and nourishes a healthy, vast "multiverse" and that reinstates her as the "jewel" of cosmos.

Carlin's fantastic journey is one that enables her to explore both her inner aspirations and Gaia's retribution. She is able to reunite with her soul mate, is able to harness the power of her many dreams and connect with reality more ably, her telepathic prowess is enhanced and so is her intuitive wisdom.

The stylistic accomplishment of EVIL SEED lies in the fact that although it's theme and subject matter is surreal, its narrative and language is both contemporary and grounded. EVIL SEED, almost in spite of what it espouses, is just like any other interesting thriller, replete with twists and turns and surprises and denouements.

For fans of the X-Files and for those fascinated by the chimerical and elusive cult of the paranormal, this will prove to be an exciting phantasmagoria that promulgates the creed that, if we, the humankind continue to stay the way we are, Earth herself shall endure to have us reduced to mere ashes. The belief that all natural catastrophes are a manifestation of this very phenomenon is a creed not unknown to Eastern esoteric practice. EVIL SEED takes this intriguing dogma a step further, and at least within the ambit of the book, makes it possible for Earth, to take reprisals.
