Do you believe in Magic?
“But though he had done so many miracles before them, yet they believed not on him.” JHN 12:37
Cliff Richards sang about his little girl who prayed for scarlet ribbons. He overheard her praying and went in search of the ribbons. But the stores were all closed, and so he returned home empty handed. But when he looked in on her again, just before the dawn was breaking, he saw her surrounded by lots of scarlet ribbons. How neat is that?
Did you ever have something magical happen to you and wondered; how did this come about? In your own mind, it must have been a miracle. The reason I speak of magic and miracles in the same sentence is that in my mind, they are the same. Don’t get me wrong. I am not talking about magic tricks; I am talking about magic. Magic tricks are illusions created to entertain you and fool you into thinking that something is, when it is not. Magic is, for me that quality of spirit you experience when something happens and the only thing you can say is; …that was a God Job, or Oh, that sunset is so beautiful, or I am so much in love with my spouse, or I can’t imagine that my prayers were answered so fast, or I need not have worried, it all worked out…..Here are some stories that I think will cause you to think about miracles.
A single parent had just acquired an apartment for herself and her son. They had just moved in when it occurred to the young lady to pray for their safety in this new place. She asked that God would protect it, protect them and their belongings. She left for work at 8:00 that morning, only to receive a call at 9:30 to say that she had to return home because some pipes had burst and the building was flooded. The water damage was so great that the floors had collapsed in some places.
To her amazement, the apartments to the right and left of hers had been destroyed because the upper floor had collapsed on them. Her apartment, however, was intact. The water even flowed around the prized paintings she had on the wall and had not damaged them in any way. All of her belongings were spared. A magical feeling came into her heart that she was especially favored by God, and this could only have been a miracle. In asking for protection it was the miracle that she prayed for without even knowing.
Miracles are mysteries because people cannot always explain how they are wrought. What we do know is that they take place and that the catalyst of Spirit can indeed move mountains.
JHN 14:12 “Verily, Verily, I say unto you. He that believeth in me; the works that I do, shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do, because I go unto my father.” I am saying that to mean that Jesus was convinced that if we believe we would be able to do even greater things than he Jesus had done because he goes before us to his Father. This is why it is clear for me that Jesus came to show us the way and that he himself is the Way. We just need to believe.
Struggling to make the rent because he had just lost his job a young man prayed. “Lord, please make a way for me today.” Without notice his father received a bonus on his job and was able to help his son pay the rent with ease. He asked and it was delivered. The miracle is that this young man believed that God would make a way for him to pay his rent. The miracle came in the believing.
In the 1980’s Olivia Newton John popularized the song “Magic”. I loved the beautiful melody and the rhythm and found myself singing along to the chorus because I never did catch the words completely. Every time it would come on the radio, I would turn up the volume… “You’ve got to believe we are magic, nothing can stand in our way”. I would sing at the top of my lungs; dancing as I drove down the highway or street.
In 2090 I was asked to be one of the speakers at the opening of a nursing school.
It suddenly it came to me to talk about the spirit of expectancy that the students must be experiencing as they prepared to enter the school. Knowing that many of them were perhaps also experiencing self-doubt, I decided to share with them something that I have used to keep me on track whenever the self-doubts came. I assured them that if they could only believe that nothing can stand in their way… if they could only know that with the belief that they are constantly being supported by a Force that is greater than them, they could never fail. With that I told them about my 29 year fascination with the song MAGIC and how I use it when self-doubt comes along. “Come take my hand, you should know me, I’ve always been in your mind, You know that I’ll be kind, I’ll be guiding you……” I have included the web site on which you will find my favorite version of the song below, as well as the song Scarlet Ribbons.
Both of these speak of the presence of that mysterious Spirit that can get everything done, even if you don’t know how or if you have self-doubts, or believe you have to depend on your efforts alone.
