“A significant amount of financial infidelity is discovered during the tax season by spouses filing joint tax returns.” says infidelity expert Ruth Houston, founder of Infidelity Advice.com, and author of Is He Cheating on You? – 829 Telltale Signs. “If you’re married and filing a joint return with your husband, you should be familiar with any financial information that appears on your income tax return. Nothing on your tax forms and the accompanying documents should come as a surprise to you“
Financial Infidelity and Marital Infidelity
According to two recent surveys, financial infidelity occurs in at least a third of all committed relationships. “Financial infidelity often accompanies sexual infidelity.” says Houston, “So if you suspect your spouse of having an extramarital affair, be alert for any discrepancies or unusual behavior associated with filing your taxes. For example, you should be very concerned if your husband refuses to answer any questions you have about the completed tax forms; or if he tries to pressure you into signing the completed return without first looking it over.
Check Out Your 1040 Form
“Closely examine all paperwork, attached forms and other documentation for unfamiliar financial information.” says Houston. “There are certain lines on Form 1040 that can reveal hidden clues about your husband’s financial affairs, including any financial transactions he may have made without your knowledge or consent.
Houston says that even your husband’s behavior at tax time can indicate financial deception. warns Houston. “If your husband won't answer your questions about the completed tax forms, he may be hiding something from you. Keep your eyes open for other signs of financial infidelity. Where there’s one sign, there are probably others just waiting to be found.”
